Dearly Departed (poem)

I dreamt about you last night.
In it, I picked you up, held you, kissed you.
I awoke in tears.

It's been over a year now,
and I still think of you, miss you.
I'm still sorry I wasn't there for you.

Our chapter is the masterpiece
I could never write, but if I could
I would rewrite it just to relive it.

I made my home in you,
in your unamused sarcastic glances,
in the warmth of your body on mine.

But you're gone now,
home has become half void,
and I don't know how to mend it.

So I close my eyes in the calm of night,
hoping yours is the face I see in my dreams,
so I can pretend you're not quite gone.
